Sorcery is a comparative new kid on the block when it comes to TCGs, having only been around three years, but it is an exciting game that, as the name suggests, plays with the Magic: The Gathering model in some fun ways.

So why take a look at Sorcery?

First, it’s Gorgeous.

Every piece of art in the game is hand painted by professional fantasy artists - in fact, they’re the same professional fantasy artists who created the look of Magic in the early days, by and large. Names like Ian Miller, Margret Organ-Kean, Melissa Benson, Jeff Menges and Drew Tucker are all contributors, so the game looks great on the table.

Second, it has a healthy metagame.

Erik’s Curiosa, the company that makes Sorcery, releases one set a year, spending a lot of time on playtesting to ensure the game’s quality is maintained. The tournament scene boasts a healthy competition where multiple decks are viable and winners are not predictable. Moreover, Sorcery is designed as a ‘kitchen table’ game - that is, it’s playable just by building from your collection, you don’t have to hunt down 4 copies of the best, most expensive cards to have a viable deck.

Third, you already know how to play.

Sorcery is unashamedly based on Magic - Magic as it was back in the 90s, but approached with modern design sensibilities. Every deck has an Avatar - very like a commander - who takes the battlefield alongside their troops. Speaking of the battlefield, unlike Magic, where your land is in an abstract realm that you can draw power from, in Sorcery, you build the battlefield as you play, using a separate Atlas Deck that you construct alongside your Spellbook. 

Best of all, Sorcery is FUN. Seriously fun. Whether cracking a box and playing sealed with some friends or constructing a deck to take to an international tournament (we have the big events here in Australia too!), Sorcery is always enjoyable to play.
